Mayumi Terano is a Diversity Fellow/Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) in the Office of International Services (OIS) at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt). Her current appointment runs through the end of Fall Term 2004. In her role as Diversity Fellow/GSA, Mayumi reports directly to Jamie B. Rayman, Assistant Director for Programming, and is responsible for assisting with various projects supportive of the vision and mission of OIS and complimentary to her academic program. Some of the projects include, but are not limited to:
- Working to lay the groundwork for the implementation of a Phi Beta Delta international honor society at the University (in partnership with the University Center for International Studies);
- Developing curricula for an OIS initiative called PASSPORT Program Series for International Students & Scholars (Preparing and Assisting Students & Scholars at Pitt through Outreach, Resources, and Training); and
- Assisting with ongoing international social and cultural programming initiatives within OIS, such as International Week, International Demonstration Cooking, International Coffeehouse Series, U.S. International Education Week, etc.
Biography
Mayumi is a Fulbright Fellow, currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program (Social and Comparative Analysis in Education) in the Department of Administrative & Policy Studies at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Education. She has a M.A. in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, India. In addition, she has a B.A. in Economics and a Certificate in English Communication from Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan.
Other academic credentials include a Certificate of Completion for the Environmental Leadership Training Seminar organized by the United Nations University, Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand, as well as a Certificate of Completion for "Project Zero Classroom 2003: Views on Understanding," Graduate School of Education, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Her professional experience includes an internship served with UNESCO in Paris during 2000. During this time she contributed to the development of the UNESCO-sponsored Culture of Peace Program.
Mayumi is fluent in Japanese (her native language) and French, and has basic reading and/or speaking knowledge of Chinese and Hindi.
