VITA Tax Advising

A new service is available to international students and scholars this year!  OIS will host a VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) site on-campus, offering free tax assistance to eligible international students and scholars.  The Pitt VITA site will be open during the last week in March to assist with Federal, State and local tax questions.

Students and scholars are asked to access CINTAX before coming for help at the VITA site.  VITA volunteers are only able to assist international students and scholars who are considered ‘Non-Residents’ for tax purposes.  CINTAX can help determine residency status for tax purposes.

For dates and times that VITA is available to you, please look here.

CINTAX

The Office of International Services (OIS) is pleased to make available to the international population at the University of Pittsburgh the CINTAX software package, which is a Web-based tax return preparation system designed exclusively for international students, scholars, teachers, researchers, trainees, and their dependents who are non-resident aliens (with or without any US-source income).  This system is designed to assist eligible foreign nationals with preparation of their federal income tax forms.  The system will take the time and confusion out of filing a US tax return!  Most international students and scholars can access the CINTAX system via the Pitt portal (www.my.pitt.edu).  See detailed instructions below.

To access the CINTAX system:

  • International STUDENTS
Log in to the University portal (my.pitt.edu) and navigate to the Student Services Community. Click on the CINTAX link to access the site.
  • International FACULTY
Log in to the University portal (my.pitt.edu) and navigate to the Faculty Services Community. Click on the CINTAX link to access the site.
  • International STAFF
Log in to the University portal (my.pitt.edu).  From the My Pages tab, select 'Add Portlets' from the dropdown menu.  Type 'MyPage CINTAX Tax Prep' in the 'Search for Portlets' text box.  Check the box next to the portlet description to select it and then add it to the page.  Click the finish button.  The portlet will appear on your page.  Click on the CINTAX link to access the site.
