Undergraduate Exchange Applicants

Please carefully review all of the following information before you complete and submit your application.  You may find additional information at the Web site of the University of Pittsburgh , the Study Abroad Office, or the Office of International Services.  If you have questions or need additional information to complete the application process, please consult the advisor to the exchange program advisor at your home institution. 

Application Deadlines*

Completed applications for admissions must be submitted by the following deadlines:

                Fall Term              Applications must be submitted and complete by April 1st

                Spring Term        Applications must be submitted and complete by October 1st

*Exceptions to the deadlines can be made on an individual basis.

Application Procedures

The application procedures and requirements are explained below.  Pease review all of the information before starting the on-line application process.   

  • On-Line Application

You must apply for formal admission to the University of Pittsburgh as a Guest Student using our on-line application for admission for international undergraduate students.  Please follow these instructions:

    • Go to the International Undergraduate Application for Admission found at the Web site of the Office of International Services          
    • Follow the instructions for completing the on-line application for admission.  Please enter the following information:

      Special Non-Degree Admission: Guest Student

      For course-load, enter:

      OIS will manually adjust term if it is not listed

    • Do not submit the application fee.  (If the system will not let you submit your application without a fee, indicate that you will pay by check.  Do not send a check.) 
  • Academic Records/Transcripts

You must submit an official original academic record from the institution you are attending. If the official document is not issued in English, a certified English translation must also be submitted.

  • Verification of English Language Proficiency

Students attending institutions in Australia, Hong Kong, or the United Kingdom are exempt from verifying English language proficiency.  All other applicants must submit evidence of English language proficiency unless you are a citizen of a country where English is the official language.  The following are used to verify English language proficiency:

    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS):  Official results must be sent directly to the Office of International Services.  For information contact the University of Cambridge, Local Examinations Syndicate, 1 Hills Road, Cambridge CB1 2EU, U.K.  The minimum IELTS score is 6.5.  
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):  The institutional code number for the University of Pittsburgh is 2927.  Results must be sent directly to the University of Pittsburgh by the Educational Testing Service.  For information contact the Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541-6151, U.S.A.  The minimum TOEFL score is 80 on the iBT (internet-based test);  213 on the CBT (computer-based test); or (550 on the PBT (paper-based test).
  • Supplemental Form for International Undergraduate Exchange Students

You must download, print, complete and submit the International Undergraduate Exchange Student Supplemental Form

Some of the information is a duplicate of information requested in the on-line application process.  However, we need this information to make sure our records are accurate.  

As part of the Supplemental Form, you must tell us which courses you want to take while attending the University of Pittsburgh.  Carefully review the courses offered and clearly indicate the course title and course number in the Course Request section of the supplemental form.

  • Endorsement from your home institution

Before you complete and submit the on-line application and the supplemental form, meet with the exchange advisor at your home institution and seek their endorsement of your application for admission to the University of Pittsburgh and your participation in the exchange program.  Any applications submitted without the appropriate signature will not be processed or considered to meet our deadlines. 

  • Mail your academic record/transcript, supplemental form that includes the course request and endorsement to:

The Office of International Services

The Office of International Services (OIS) provides a variety of services for international students.  The Admissions section of OIS functions as the admission office for international undergraduate applicants.  The Advising section facilitates and assists with matters regarding U.S. immigration laws/regulations and your period of authorized stay in the United States.  The Programming section facilitates social and cultural programs designed to help international students adjust to life in the U.S. and at Pitt.

All new students must attend the International Student Orientation program as well as the orientation in their academic programs.  Detailed information about orientation will be sent at the time of admission.

 

Process for Issuing Visa Documents for International Students

  • Upon receiving notice of admission to the University of Pittsburgh, the Office of International Services will review your file.      
  • If the file is in order and the financial support information submitted is complete and acceptable, a visa document is then prepared and sent to you by the Study Abroad Office together with other important arrival information.  The processing time for the issuance of a visa document is normally ten business days from the time a complete file is reviewed in OIS. 

Financial Support Documentation

Any one of the following may be used as documentation of support:

  • Before you complete and submit the University of Pittsburgh Certification of Financial Responsibility, consult with the exchange advisor at your home institution to verify what costs are covered by the exchange agreement between your institution and the University of Pittsburgh.  
  •  Indicate in the appropriate place on the Certification of Financial Responsibility the amount to be covered by the exchange agreement. 
  • Calculate the difference from the estimated cost and the amount covered by the exchange agreement.  Indicate the amount to be covered by you and/or your family or other source of support and document with bank statements or other appropriate documentation.

Cost Estimates for the University of Pittsburgh

The figures below are for Academic Year 2007-08, effective Fall Term 2007.  The costs for Academic Year 2008-09, effective Fall Term 2008, are subject to change without notice.  For immigration purposes, providing evidence of financial support to meet the costs outlined below is sufficient; however, please note that actual costs will likely increase for 2008-09. The amount that will be your responsibility will vary depending on the exchange agreement with your home institution.  Please check with the exchange advisor at your home institution if you have questions as to what costs are be covered by the exchange agreement.
